Western Governors University Holds the Line: No Tuition Increase This Year

Undergraduate Tuition to Remain at $5,890 per Year

Salt Lake City, Utah (September 14, 2009) Despite a growing demand for online, competency-based bachelor’s and master’s degree programs, Western Governors University, www.wgu.edu, announced today that it will not raise tuition this year. Tuition, which is $5,780 per year for most undergraduate programs, has only increased by $200 over the past 4 years. The private, non-profit university will not increase tuition for at least 10 months, although enrollment is climbing at record levels in all undergraduate and graduate degree programs. WGU matriculated more than 1,400 new students in September alone.

“A key part of WGU’s mission is to make higher education accessible and affordable,” said WGU President Dr. Robert Mendenhall. “By avoiding a tuition increase this year, while so many are struggling economically, we hope to enable more students to pursue their degrees and enhance their careers.”

WGU’s tuition is comparable to a state college or university and is roughly half the cost of other online universities. In addition to financial aid, WGU offers a number of scholarships in all degree areas. In the past 12 months, the university has awarded more than $1.2 million in scholarships. WGU’s mentor-guided, competency-based academic model provides both flexibility and one-on-one support. Rather than semesters on defined schedules, study at WGU is organized in 6-month terms that can begin at the beginning of any month.
