Our Unit Vision/Mission
The vision/mission of the Information Technology College of Western Governors University is to prepare IT professionals who: Understand, communicate and apply appropriate information technologies as well as employ appropriate methodologies to help individuals and organizations achieve their goals and objectives; Function as a user advocate;Manage the information technology resources of an individual or organization; Anticipate the changing direction of information technology and evaluate and communicate the likely utility of new technologies to an individual or organization; Understand and, in some cases, contribute to the scientific, mathematical and theoretical foundations on which information technologies are built; Live and work as a contributing, well-rounded and ethical member of society.
As a result, we envision recognition as the premier competency–based, online, national Information Technology College, and expect to develop a cohort of professionals who meet the nation’s need for highly qualified computing professionals.
Information Security and Assurance Mission
Given the exponential growth of the internet fueled by advances in technology, and the corresponding volume of information exchange in cyberspace, there is an acknowledged need for securing our information systems and communication networks against threats of attack. Organizations continue to grapple with the dual challenges of protecting their information assets on the one hand, while at best coping with the rapidly changing technology on the other. Given the vulnerabilities and threats of cyber terrorism in recent years, there has been an increasing demand for trained Information Security professionals within the corporate world, government agencies and military organizations. The mission of WGU’s Information Security and Assurance Center is to provide a resource to our graduates and current students that promotes of information security and assurance best practices.
